SafeCare wins Health Care Innovation Award
Huntingdon Valley, PA—November 12, 2012—Holy Redeemer Health System was honored to receive the 2012 Gold Award for Patient Safety, part of the Health Care Innovation Awards sponsored by the Philadelphia Business Journal on November 8, 2012. Holy Redeemer, which includes a community hospital, three long-term care facilities with more than 500 beds, and a homecare/hospice program that serves three counties in Pennsylvania and 13 counties in New Jersey, introduced its SafeCare program in 2010 with the goal of zero serious safety events in its HealthCare, HomeCare, and LifeCare divisions.
“Holy Redeemer’s mission is to ‘care, comfort, and heal’,” says Karen Renson, RN, Vice President/Chief Quality and Safety Officer. “But implicit in that mission is to first do no harm. So our goal, system wide, was to reach zero serious safety events—something that’s very ambitious for any hospital, let alone a health system as diverse as Holy Redeemer.”
Establishing the SafeCare program and creating a culture of safety and reliability has resulted in significant decreases in serious safety incidents—and the HomeCare division has already reached its goal of zero. By taking a cue from the aviation and nuclear industries, where there is zero tolerance for safety events, Holy Redeemer has steadily improved patient safety everywhere. Employees and physicians spent more than 16,000 hours training on safety techniques, improving communication, and preventing accidents like falls and medication errors. Seven days a week staff members participate in Safety Calls during which they report any problems related to safety, any near misses, or general concerns that might affect patient safety in the future. In the hospital, signs are posted outside patient rooms reminding staff of the ‘three foot rule’, wherein if you are within three feet of a patient’s room you are expected to respond to a call light. This action alone can prevent the patient from taking on an unsafe task and risking a fall or other injury.
Holy Redeemer Health System was also recognized by Leapfrog, a national organization that assesses safety in hospitals and health systems. Based on data from The Joint Commission, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers of Disease Control and Medicare/Medicaid, the scores range from A-F. In June 2012, Holy Redeemer received an A rating.
