Holy Redeemer Lafayette Hosts Senior Olympics
Posted Date: 8/10/2012
Philadelphia, PA—August 10, 2012—People of all ages, worldwide, look forward to the spectacle and thrill of the quadrennial Olympic Games. So to excite and involve its residents in the 30th Olympiad, Holy Redeemer Lafayette, an independent-living retirement community in Northeast Philadelphia, hosted a competition of its own.
The opening ceremony for the Holy Redeemer Olympics was held on Friday, July 27th to coincide with that in London. Staff converted the resident community room into the Olympic Stadium, donning the walls with flags of nations worldwide. Staff and residents, who competed in the games together, kicked off the festivities with a Parade of Nations, dressed in athletic garb and flying miniature flags. The lighting of the Olympic Flame, by resident Bill Whitehouse, segued into a live musical performance by Peter Young, who played several American favorites, including This Land is Your Land and Yankee Doodle, on the banjo and acoustic guitar.
The ceremony was followed by a week-long competition. Events included a basketball free throw contest, 25-yard wheelchair dash, javelin throw, and disc golf tournament. At the culmination of the games, a closing ceremony was held, where the Olympic champions were decorated with gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Robin Frankwich, Vice President of LifeCare Services, was proud of what Holy Redeemer Lafayette was able to accomplish for this special event: “We’ve been working towards bringing our residents—all of our residents, from our independent living, personal care, and skilled nursing units—together as one, unified community. It’s wonderful to see residents meeting more of their neighbors and becoming friends, and I look forward to helping these relationships continue to grow at future gatherings.”
Holy Redeemer Lafayette is located at 8580 Verree Road in Philadelphia, and is part of Holy Redeemer Health System. Visit http://www.holyredeemer.com/lafayette for more information.
