Holy Redeemer Shares Talent with Overlook Elementary School Students
Posted Date: 4/9/2013
Meadowbrook, PA—April 9, 2013—When Overlook Elementary School in Abington was looking for volunteers for its after-school enrichment program, Christine Slavin had an idea. The mother of three Overlook students, Slavin is also coordinator of nursing education at Holy Redeemer Hospital. This gave her access to a host of professionals with many different talents.
“I figured I would ask around the hospital to see if anyone would be interested in helping out,” says Slavin. “Fortunately, two people stepped up.”
Todd Humphreys, a hospital chef, came to the school every Wednesday afternoon for six weeks and taught students about healthy cooking and nutrition. Each week, the students also made a healthy snack, including grilled chicken wraps, muffins and yogurt parfaits. Holy Redeemer donated all of the food as well as chef hats and aprons for the students to wear.
Nursing educator Lindsay O’Connor, who is also a dance instructor, volunteered to teach dance. Over six weeks, she taught the students a two-minute routine that they performed for parents at the end of the program.
“It was not only great that these two employees volunteered to help out but also that the hospital supported their work in the community,” says Slavin.
