Mammography can detect cancer or other problems before a lump becomes large enough to be felt, as well as assist in the diagnosis of other breast problems. The risk for breast cancer increases with age, especially after age 40, the American Cancer Society (ACS) says. As a general guideline, the ACS recommends a yearly mammogram after age 40. Your health care provider, however, may propose another strategy based on your situation.
Holy Redeemer is one of the few area healthcare providers to offer breast tomosynthesis (commonly referred to as a 3D mammogram). While digital mammography is still one of the most advanced technologies available today, it is only a two-dimensional picture of the breast. Since the breast is composed of pockets of dense tissue surrounded by fat, when X-rayed, it creates an image that looks something like a smoky haze. The overlapping tissue in the image makes it difficult to see tiny “spots” called microcalcifications, and other subtle signs of early cancer.
Breast tomosynthesis is a new technology in the fight against breast cancer and may be used in conjunction with traditional digital mammography as part of your annual screening mammogram to capture more breast images. Currently, it is not covered by insurance; however, the standard 2D portion is covered as part of your annual screening mammogram. Patients who would like to request a 3D mammogram will need a prescription from their referring physician, and the cost for it is $50.
