The Value of Volunteering

We are very fortunate at Holy Redeemer Lafayette because so many of our residents volunteer. I work in the activities department and many of the activities are run by residents. A couple of these are: welcoming new residents to their home, introducing the evening programs, singing in the chorus, visiting residents in Health care and researching currents events to bring to “News and Views.  Our “Needlework’s Group knit lap robes for our veterans and the list goes on.  The various jobs they do gives meaning and purpose back to their lives. They have a reason to get out of that bed and get dressed. They get to know other residents, thus developing a better social life.  They are using their talents and sharing their experiences with other people. Volunteering often helps to improve their self- esteem, knowing that they are making their home a better place.

Many of our resident volunteers stay more active which improves their own physical health, making them feel better. Studies have shown that volunteering can also help with relieving pain. Giving back can help relieve stress and often serves as a distraction for seniors suffering from conditions such as arthritis and high blood pressure. Volunteering also helps conquer depression and the feeling isolation. Our residents that volunteer are happier knowing that are making a difference in someone’s life and in their community.

Now, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all our volunteers for their dedication, sharing their talent and for giving from the heart to make our lives betters.  On April 13th, we will be honoring all of our volunteers from the Holy Redeemer Health System at our annual luncheon. We want our volunteers to know how much they are appreciated. We want to let them know that their gift of caring is priceless. We want them to know that the world is a better place because they choose to share their gifts with us.
