Good for you! Your decision to move forward with joint replacement has put you on the road to an improved quality of life and getting back to doing the things you love. You're probably asking yourself many questions. What happens next? How do I get started? How long after surgery or being released from the hospital do I have to wait to resume activities? We'll answer all your questions and go through the steps of joint replacement together.

What Happens Before Joint Replacement Surgery

In preparation for your surgery, Redeemer Health will schedule you for our comprehensive joint replacement program, which covers everything you need to know, including:

• Pre-admission procedures
• Pre-surgery exercises
• Ways to prepare your home
• What to bring
• What happens the day of surgery
• Your hospital stay
• What to expect after surgery
• Medications/therapy

What Happens After Joint Replacement Surgery

Patients typically remain in the hospital for a few days after surgery. Upon leaving the hospital, most patients continue their rehabilitation in the comfort of their own homes with Redeemer Health Home Care services. Others who are ready to be released from the hospital, but aren't quite ready to go home, may enter our Short-Stay Rehab Program.

As a short-stay rehab patient, you'll continue your recovery with therapists you know, instead of having to start over with new therapists in an outside facility. Short-stay rehabilitation may include medical care, as well as physical, occupational and/or speech therapy depending on your needs and the recommendations of your physician. The emphasis is on intensive rehabilitation and medical care with one goal in mind—to get you back to life.

As a short-stay patient, you'll have access to programs and activities that will keep your mind and body motivated and sharp during your stay. Group rehabilitation programs foster camaraderie, and it’s not uncommon for patients to encourage and root each other on. Activities may include planned group dining to increase socialization, as well as games, themed events, and other social gatherings.

When you're ready to be released from our short-stay facility, we'll help you put a home care plan in place, if needed. Before leaving, you and your family will meet with our therapists and receive training on how to continue your progress at home. A report will also be sent to your physician.
